Service of a 2007 Simplicity snow blower

    Gary - November 15, 2020
    Tool Type

    Snowblower

    Difficulty

    Medium

    Time

    More than 2 hours

    Tools Used

Screwdriver, Pliers, Socket set, Wrench Set, Nutdriver, Adjustable Wrench

This started out as a service no an older Simplicity 9.5 hp 28" snow blower. After looking over the snow blower I found there was a lot of play in the drive shaft. It turned out to be the ball bearing on the left side of the axle and the plastic bushing on the right side of the axle. Once I removed the transmission bottom cover I also found the friction wheel (item that changes the drive speed) badly worn which caused some wear/gouging to the mating service of the friction pully. To perform this the engine/transmission had to be separated from the snow blower. The friction wheel needed to be replaced but I was able to resurface the friction pully on the lathe. This lead to the need to replace the drive v-belt and the auger drive belt, an easy replacement with the snow blower now in two separated pieces. Next I discovered the drive shaft for the auger had a large amount of play both horizontally and vertically caused by a completely worn out auger ball bearing. The hardest part of this was removing the shaft pulley that was held on by 2 square 8mm set screws. The pulley was turned so access to the set screws was between the ball bearing enclosure and the pulley requiring a socket wrench, extension and a 12 point 5/16 in socket (the smallest 12 point socket that I had). The socket was loose, but thank fully the set screws were not too tight.
The entire service took approximately 2 weeks, most of which was waiting for repair parts from several different online supply companies. Prior to reassembly all moving components were cleaned and greased.

Just followed instructions in the owners manual.
Unit had to be seperated into two half inorder to get the belt around the bottom pulley.
Beacause of the weight I needed my Son to assist me putting it back together.

    It's back in action now.
