The Auger Control Cable Was Broke and the Tension Bushing Was Missing

Marie - February 23, 2022
Tool Type

Snowblower

Difficulty

Easy

Time

15-30 minutes

Tools Used

, 7/16 wrench

This repair was done on a Craftsman Snowblower Model Number 536.885200. I replaced both the auger cable control and the tension bushing. On the snowblower I removed the boot from the spark plug for safety purposes. I then removed the broken cable control. I loosened the tension nut from the tension spring with a 7/16 wrench, but did not remove the nut. I then opened both packages and fit the new cable control through the top slot of the new tension bushing. I then attached the tension bushing to the tension spring of the snowblower and fished the end of the cable through the hole under the tension spring. I then fished the cable behind the belt and then connected the cable end to the hole under the snowblower where I removed the old broken cable. The other end of the cable was then hooked into the top hole in the auger control handle with the auger control handle disengaged. I then engaged the auger control handle to tighten the cable and slowly released it. I then tightened the nut on the tension spring. I then put the boot back on the spark plug. Job done.
Video on YouTube helped me out.

Broken control cable

Bruce - March 28, 2021
Tool Type

Snowblower

Difficulty

Easy

Time

Less than 15 minutes

Tools Used

Screwdriver

1) Both ends of the control cable have a formed metal part that slips into a hole in the control arm at the low end and into an identical hole on the control lever handle. The control cable is kind of "springy", so it took a couple tries to get fed properly through to the control handle.
2) When the old cable broke the tension bushing went flying. Never did find it, so had to purchase the bushing as well. The trick here is to put the tension bushing onto the cable for installing the cable in the machine. Spread the slot slightly with a screwdriver to get the cable to slide in.
3) Purchase a spare cable to have on hand in case it breaks again.
