Broken switch on 38-year-old Milwaukee Sawzall

    Tool Type

    Jig saw

    Difficulty

    Easy

    Time

    15-30 minutes

    Tools Used

    Screwdriver, Pliers

    1. Removed screws and nuts from the two sides of the red plastic handle of Sawzall and separated them.
    2. Lifted out bad switch, removed first spade connector and placed it into same slot on new switch.
    3. Removed second spade connector and placed it into same slot on new switch.
    4. And so on, and so on, in order to insure that I got the right connector into the right slot.
    5. Placed new switch into place and reassembled handle.
The only slightly tricky parts were getting the soft brass connectors out of one switch and into the other one without snapping them (I used pliers), getting the switch in the proper location before reassembly (the guide ridges weren't completely obvious), and routing the wires so as not to pinch them when tightening the screws.

Sawzall only worked in a certain position. Upside down, actually.

    Difficulty

    Easy

    Time

    Less than 15 minutes

    Tools Used

    Screwdriver

Opened the handle, unplugged the wires, installed the new switch and reassembled. Probably the easiest repair I've ever had. It took all of 15 minutes !!

    Time

    Tools Used

    Screwdriver

    1. Removed screws holding handle together and separated two pieces of handle in half
    2. Unplugged each wire from the old switch and plugged them into the corresponding space of the new switch, one wire at a time, so I wouldn't get any mixed up.
    3. Put the two handle pieces back together and tightened screws.
    4. Plugged in to test operation, and everything worked like it should.
