"This is a starter rope for your chainsaw. The starter rope wraps around the pulley in the engine starter assembly. When the rope is pulled, the pulley spins on the starter hub. The hub contains teeth that connect with the flywheel. This turns the engine and allows it to start. The starter rope can wear with use and can eventually break. Do not over-forcefully pull the rope or pull the entire rope out of the starter for any reason. It is also important to never allow the grip to snap back.
For this repair, begin by removing the top cover. Next, remove the starter assembly. Then remove the starter rope from the pulley. If the rope has snapped, the tension on the recoil spring is already removed. If the rope has not snapped, you will need to remove the handle from the end of the rope and let the rope go so there is no longer tension on the recoil spring. Pull the rope out from the side of the pulley located in the housing. Once the rope is unwound you can remove it by removing the screw. The new rope is ready to be installed."
