2. removed the two bolts that allow separation of the front auger section from the body of the snow blower.
3. Removed the plastic guard that covers the engine pulleys and belts.
4. Installed the new tensioner spring. The first time I hooked it in, it was in a position where the coil part of the spring extension would rub on the main drive pulley. So I repositioned the spring end for end and placed the coil section away from the drive pulley.
5. Reversed the above steps for re-assembly.
NOW FOR THE 20/20 HIND SIGHT PART!! :-)
Before doing all of the above work, I had tried to remove the plastic/rubber cover that houses the belts and pulleys but it wouldn't clear the bottom of the snow throw chute. (If a could have removed it I would have been able to replace the idler spring without taking the snow blower apart I thought about trimming off the corner of the cover but was worried it might create a gap that would allow melting snow to drip on the belts and pulleys. Once I had the front and rear sections of the machine separated I could see that I could snip off enough of the left front bottom corner of the guard without leaving a gap. In other words I could have done that without taking half the snow blower apart!!! Live and learn as they say... I hope all this saves others from all the repair steps above because it's a real pain the hoonyak! And so it goes....
