5 HP limb-chipper's oil seal needed replacement

    Berkeley - June 12, 2018
    Tool Type

    Engine

    Difficulty

    Medium

    Time

    1-2 hours

    Tools Used

Wrench Set, curved ice-pick to remove the old seal

Disassembled and cleaned the working parts of the chipper-
Identified the Model of the engine, then traced the availability of an identical part to eReplacementParts.com. (The original part was discontinued by Briggs; my chipper is over 25 years old...)-
Carefully drilled two small holes in the old (output shaft side) seal at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions-
Using a curved-end pick, gently removed the old oil seal-
Cleaned the block and seal housing, then applied oil and aligned the seal. Then, gently pressed in the new seal-
Using a pipe of the proper diameter slipped over the crankshaft, tapped in the seal such that it was snug-
Reassembled the chipping blades, shroud and chute, etc-
    Viola! Done! (Thanks, eReplacementParts.com.)
