Rear oil seal on auger gearbox leaking

Edward - January 14, 2021
Tool Type

Snowblower

Difficulty

Medium

Time

More than 2 hours

Tools Used

Screwdriver, Pliers, Socket set, Adjustable Wrench

Actual mechanics are fairly straightforward and logical. What took most of the repair time was removing drive pulley and impeller from shaft. After 16 years they had become 'frozen' on and needed different attempts to finally remove. Before replacing them back on added an anti seize to the shaft.

You must disassemble the entire front endo of the machine to replace the rear gear box.
Take pictures to see the correct location of washers and direction of augers.
** You will need a gear puller to removed the hub that holds the drive belt pulley.
Good luck removing the impeller that throws the snow. Mine was rusted on and couldn't be removed even with heating with a torch. I damaged the worm drive shaft is sits on.

So, to replace a $9 dollar seal I ended up replacing the worm shaft and impeller. I'm in it over $200 because you might as well replace the belts etc. while you have it totally apart.
