I removed the pull starter cover and removed the old pull rope and spring. I inserted the new spring and re-wound the rope and fed it through the cover. I measured the rope length to the point that there was enough tension to fully retract the rope. I aligned the cover and replaced the screws.

    Broken recoil starter drum

    Tools Used

Screwdriver, Pliers, Socket set, locking pliers

Everything except winding up and installing the recoil spring is easy in this repair. The single struggle is winding up the recoil spring into a small diameter coil. It took needle nose and locking needle nose pliers to hold the powerful coil, as well as flat screwdrivers to load the wound coil into the housing. Pay attention to the direction of the coil, or you may find yourself removing it again to reverse it. Once the coil spring is in place, the rest is easy.
