Toaster: Burnt or Electrical Smell
If you smell a burnt or electrical smell coming for your toaster, it might be time for a repair. The most common parts that cause this symptom are the pan, rack, element, and control board. Once you have inspected these parts for damage or signs of malfunction, read our troubleshooting guide for tips on how to diagnose the problem and get your toaster back to running efficiently again. If specific instructions are required for your model, refer to your owner's manual.
Elements
If you sense a burning or electrical smell from your toaster, then check the heating element. If food particles are dripped onto the element, it can begin to produce smoke and burns. To repair and access the burnt-out elements, unscrew and lift the top of the toaster. Next, unscrew and bend wires and brass links away from the element. Now you can remove damaged element by sliding it out and replacing it with the new one. Ensure that the parts and wires are correctly positioned and reassembled.

Racks
Like the pan, racks can gather breadcrumbs and small food particles if it is not cleaned. If too much builds up and it begins to burn, it will be harder to clean the racks. It is best to replace the rack in your toaster to prevent a burning smell. Remember to unplug the toaster before installing the new part.

Pans
The drip pan, drip tray, or baking sheet is used for easy release and ensures even heating across the pan. With use, crumbs and small particles can build up on the tray if you do not clean it periodically. The food particles and toast crumbs can begin burning on your tray. If you notice and sense a burning smell, then check the tray and replace with a new and clean one.

Control Boards
If one of the components of the circuit board in your toaster is burnt, it can start to smell and will need to be replaced. To install new circuit board, flip toaster upside down and unscrew screws at the bottom using a Philips head screwdriver. Flip toaster back up and support the bottom as you remove the top. Now that you can access the board, detach the cable connecter from the toaster by pulling it away from the board. Now unscrew all screws that attach the board to the cover and remove it. Now you can install the new board.
