In the repair process, first look for the simplest, most obvious defect, and progress from there.
Separate the halves of the handle and remove from the motor housing.
Take a photo of the wiring layout so it goes back together the exact same way.
Check for broken wires on the power cord. Check for continuity between the plug prongs and the connectors at the switch with a multimeter set to ohms.
Check for burned wires to motor and control circuit board.
Check condition of the brushes and holders.
Check the surface of the commutator on the armature.
If that all looks good then proceed deeper:
Use a multimeter for the next step.
Remove switch and check that it clicks, and switches power on both sets of contacts.
Caution: The next step involves 110v electricity. Protect yourself from electric shock.
Momentarily bypass the switch and control board to check if the motor runs.
If it does, then the broken part is most likely the speed control board.
Order one from eReplacementParts and install it exactly like the original. Use the photo you took at disassembly as a reference.
Reassemble the handle being careful to route all the wires in the correct clips and away from any pinch points.
Plug in the saw, and go cut some wood!
