I removed the piece of the broken guard by removing two screws (if difficult to remove, spray WD40 on them and let it sit for a while) and tapped the remaining piece of plastic out of the trimmer. I snapped the new guard into place and replaced the screws.

    , Square drive bit

Removed the old guard with some difficulty. Removing the screws using a square drive bit did not release the old guard since there are also two locking tabs. Cut the plastic tabs with a hacksaw and the old guard came right out. The new guard fit perfect. NOTE that the new guard does not come with a string cutter blade so save the old guard and remove the blade and reinstall on the new guard. Good to go.

My son-in-law replaced the guard on the trimmer. He found no screws/bolts were included so he purchased them. Then, he had to work to get "cutter" (some little piece attached to the guard. He said it was to cut the string). off the original broken guard. After he was able to do that and put it on the new guard, all worked fine. Thank you. All is fine now!

Because the blade was missing, the string would tighten on the spool instead of releasing more string.
