This is a genuine OEM sourced replacement part designed for use with Weed Eater string trimmers. It connects the upper shaft and the cutting head. This item is made out of metal and it is sold individually. To complete this repair you would only need a screwdriver to transfer the guard from the old assembly onto the new one.

Disconnected lower shaft from upper shaft. Attached new lower shaft to upper shaft, threaded cutting head on to the new lower shaft. Installed new guard with hardware onto to the lower shaft. Easy repair.
Remove the broken lower shaft from upper shaft. Then remove the cutting head assembly from the old lower shaft and install it on the new lower shaft, then do the same with the guard.
