2) Removed the blade guard assembly with the standard blade wrench and phillip head
screwdriver
3) Removed the saw blade with the blade wrench
4) Used a flat tip screwdriver to remove the stop ring (C-clip) and flat washer that retains
the link plate
5) Used an Allen key wrench to remove the rear pivot bolt for the link plate
6) Removed the link plate and used a compressed air nozzle to blow the dust out of the
upper saw guide and laser lens area
7) installed the link plate on the front post first with the flat washer and stop ring (C-clip)
8) installed the rear pivot bolt and made sure the saw body moved up and down freely
9) Installed the saw blade
10 Installed the blade guard and tested for smooth action
My makita ls1013L would not plunge down.

I pretty much replaced everything that is related to the guard and how the saw plunges from a resting position. Nothing helped. I believe I narrowed it down to the bushing on the arm that flips the guard up and out of the way. If you look at this schematic, it is item #27, Fig. 27, Ring 6, item #257163-5.
