Replace cord and lost chuck key

    Tools Used

Screwdriver, Pliers, soldering iron & solder, wire stripper

For my 40 year old Milwaukee drill, I bought the parts I used and downloaded bulletin 58-01-0645 for the wiring diagram which allowed me to verify that the old cord was wired correctly. I stripped and tinned the new leads to match the old ones. The switch assembly has a push in connector that must be released by pushing in a piece of stiff wire or a jewelers screwdriver next to the old wire to release the old wire. Do not try to pull out the old wire without releasing since the switch is no longer available and you will be stuck with parts you don\'t need when you buy your new drill. The wire leads don\'t like to stay where they belong, so it may take several tries to get the handle with its 6 screws back together. If you have to force things, take it apart again and rearrange the leads.

I am 71 years old and I have been using a soldering iron since I was 7, so this was an easy fix for me. There aren't very many parts still available for these old drills, so open up the drill and investigate before you order. The old chuck key disappeared after the original key holder broke. Since I inherited the drill from my dad, it has sentimental value. It was also difficult to use without a proper key which made the drill low mileage although it was 40 years old. The switch has a broken pivot on the reversing lever which made the repair questionable. It works! I don't lend it out for that and other reasons.
