The hinge pin seized; 1/2 in the lid, 1/2 in the bbq base

Tool Type

Outdoor Grill

Difficulty

Easy

Time

15-30 minutes

Tools Used

Screwdriver, Pliers, Power Drill, Mallet, punch, press

For the piece stuck in the lid, I removed the lid from the bbq. I dismantled the lid into 3 pieces. A bit of the pin on the lid piece had about 1/8" protruding from it. I used a vise like a press to remove the pin. On the base side, I struggled with removing the frozen pin. I tried forcing it out with a mallet and punch but was unsuccessful. I tried heating the hinge ear with a torch followed by striking with a mallet and punch, which was also unsuccessful. Finally, I used a drill to bore out the shaft, starting with a very small bit and working my way up to a size just smaller than the diameter of the shaft.
At this point, I was able to remove it with a punch and mallet. Re-assembly was rather simple; performing the reverse steps of disassembly.

Repair and replaced, stainless steel burner tubes, stainless steel 16 guage flavor bars, stainless steel round bar grill plates. Also, replaced igniter to grill and side burner along with side burner stainless steel lid. Looks brand new and gets even hotter than when it was new with the 16 guage flavor bars!
