Easy 15-30 minutes (3 rated repairs)?

Drive axel bushings wore out badly, causing the wheels to lock up the chain on the sprocket.

Raymond - March 19, 2019
Tool Type

Snowblower

Difficulty

Easy

Time

30-60 minutes

Tools Used

Wrench Set, Jack stands

Put the snow blower up on 3 jack stands, 2 in front and 1 in rear. Unbolted the wheel bolts, pulling them off laterally. Then just pulled the bushings out off of the shaft, cleaned the shaft, reapplied grease on the shaft and inside the new bushings and re-inserted the bushings on each side on the axel. Then just reattach the wheels and set down on the ground. It worked great!

Worn out axle bearings on MTD snowblower

Easy - simply remove one wheel at a time by pulling out the pin (no tools needed). After one wheel is removed, slip the spacer/washer off of the axle and then the bearing is free to also slip off of the axle. Replace the bearing with the new one and reverse the procedure to reassemble the wheel. Now do the same thing for the other side. In my case the 'flat' on the bearing flange serves no purpose and it matters not how it is oriented. The same bearing is probably used on several models and on some the 'flat' may be necessary. Be certain to oil everything generously. To prolong bearing life, oil before each use.
