The metal spring is fitted inside the control panel of the dishwasher door, resetting the latch of the door when the handle is released. This spring is sold individually, and a screwdriver is needed for the installation.

Dishwasher handle
The part was a match - but was not sure how to do it until I took the door apart. The videos helped but they were not crystal clear. It was a five minute repair after all.

Spring worked well on Kitchenaid Dishwasher
The door release handle arm broke one one side. There was only one spring on the side opposite the failure. Added a second spring to balance the loade on the handle arms.

Required separating control panel from the door of the dishwasher: six torque-bit screws. Once the control panel was separated from the door itself, the old handle snapped out easily, the new one dropped right in (once I was sure of the orientation). There are two small springs that guide the handle operation. Using a curved hook to pull the free end of each spring over the stud on the handle, the job was completed. Only required putting control panel back in place (snap-in), and replacing the screws that hold it. A future repair will involve repairing the studs the screws go into, as all but two have fractured. Epoxy will take car of that.
