1. Replaced the oil.
2. Put the new dip stick in.
3. Had my husband screw it in tightly so that it wouldn't jump out when I pulled the rope.This was the reason for my problem - I did not have the strength in my fingers and was not aware that the dip stick had come out when i started mowing until I saw all the smoke.
