The main problem was that the Kohler mower motor wouldn't start. There's no push bulb primer like on other mowers. There are YouTube videos about this that describe issues with the automatic choke. A coil spring (hidden in the shiny round metal case) keeps the choke butterfly valve closed until the mower is started and warmed up. When heated by the exhaust manifold, the coil rotates and turns a lever arm that keeps the carburetor butterfly valve open when running. The coils can go bad.
On my mower I found that the choke mechanism was just unhooked. My coil spring lever arm wasn't hooked up to the lever arm that rotates the choke butterfly valve in the carburetor. I probably didn't need the new coil/arm assembly but I replaced it anyway and now have a spare.
You can't just drop the connecting wire from the choke pivot arm into the lever which opens and closes the choke butterfly valve. It will just fall out when the mower is tipped for cleaning and it's not closing the butterfly valve anyway. First, one end of the connecting wire goes up vertically into the lever arm that rotates the butterfly valve in the carburetor. This end of the connecting wire has three 90degree bends which form three sides of an open rectangle. Start this end UP into the butterfly valve lever arm. Slide it through two 90degree bends so the very end points down and the OTHER end points left toward the heating coil lever arm. This OTHER end of the connecting wire has a narrow bend that returns horizontally. It gets inserted into the downward pointing choke coil lever arm. The choke coil lever arm then gets rotated 90 degrees and fiddled around so it can be attached to the exhaust manifold with two nuts. Two screws that use a star bit, a narrow screwdriver, or a dull knife then attach the lever arm shaft support to the carburetor. A picture would have been worth a lot of these words. The mower started on the second pull. No more need for opening the air cleaner and squirting in starting fluid any more. The rope may last longer too...
