    Remove muffler, unscrew side plate and replace diaphragm reinstall side plate and put back muffler back on engine

    I soaked the carb in cleaner, ringed it off and blew out the ports and installed the new parts. The diaphragm was the main culprit but a new spark plug helped too.

    Found my grandfather's old plow under a pile of scrap metal while clearing out my dad's barn. The 5 hp implement was on its side in the dirt and was last used 40 years or more.

    1. Removed starter rope assembly in order to remove dirt.
    2. Removed and flushed fuel tank.
    3. Cleaned carb and replaced needle valve and diaphragm and spring.
    4. Replace spark plug.
    5. Reassembled and started. Runs fine!

    1. Removed engine cover.
    2. Removed the carburetor/ gas tank unit.
    3. Removed carburetor from the gas tank.
    4. Removed the diaphragm cover from the carburetor.
    5. Removed the diaphragm and return spring unit from the carburetor.
    6. Cleaned all surfaces and passage ways.
    7. Replaced the diaphragm return spring and diaphragm on the carbuetor.
    8. Attached the carburetor to the gas tank.
    9. Attached the gas tank/carburetor unit to the engine, and hooked up the throttle and governor linkages.
    10. Attached the engine cover.
    11. Stated the engine and it ran again.

    Fuel pump diaphragm was bad. Gas tank rusted.

    1. Removed fuel tank and carburetor
    2. Sand blasted inside of fuel tank.
    3 Cleaned carb and blew out fuel pick-up tubes and carb.
    4. Replaced carb to tank gasket, intake gasket, and diaphragm gasket.

    Briggs engine would run when primed through carburetor throat but would then quit indicating fuel pump diaphragm was bad.

    1) Removed carburetor from engine
    2) Removed diaphragm cover plate from carb.
    3) cleaned all surfaces and ports.
    4) replaced diaphragm spring and diaphragm.
    5) attached diaphragm cover.
    6) installed new fuel tank and carb gaskets and reattached carburetor to engine.

    Air compressor engine would die under load.

    During carb disassembly, noticed the diaphragm 'flap' was contorted - not making good seal.
    Replacement was very simple with new diaphragm.
    Engine runs great now.

    Carburetor diaphragm had a hole in it

    1. Remove carburetor from fuel tank.
    2. Clean carb with carb cleaner
    3. Remove diaphragm cover.
    4. Replace diaphragm. Be careful not to lose the spring.
    5. Reinstall cover.
    6. Reinstall carb on fuel tank, and reconnect linkage.

    Lack of power (carb) and blade cable broken

    Carb diaphragm replaced easily (5 screws on side of carb)..
    Jet needle then needed adjustment (trial-and-error to get most power).
    Blade cable was a direct replacement of OEM part -- very easy.
    Now my mower is as good as new.
