Drive gear sheared and retainer bushing damaged when replacing.

    Ron - November 20, 2020
    Tool Type

    Lawn Mower

    Difficulty

    Medium

    Time

    15-30 minutes

    Tools Used

Screwdriver, Pliers, Wrench Set, Adjustable Wrench

You have to remove the drive gear and adjustment plate to get to the retainer bushing. Because it is probably rusted on, you will need to use a very large wrench or a vise and hammer if you do not have the right size wrench. After you get it part reassembly is very easy.

Transmission lock-up, worn belt, failed wheel bearings, cracked wheel covers

    Kris - June 13, 2020
Watched Youtube video and followed his instructions, they were mostly correct, my challenges were because of rust and corrosion that wouldn't allow easy disassembly. Process too long to type, watch the video.

Drive wheels sloppy causing premature drive & pinion gear wear

    Stephen - June 9, 2020
    Tool Type

    Lawn Mower

    Difficulty

    Easy

    Time

    15-30 minutes

    Tools Used

    Socket set, Snap ring Pliers

The original bearings were totally worn out, the plastic sleeves were gone completely, the rear wheels were moving around and causing the gears inside the wheel to misalign and grind and wear out quick. I replaced the bearings and bushings to get rid of the slop, the bearing retainer just made the job easier so I could replace the assembly and did not have to remove the old bearing. It goes together just like the parts drawings on the website. I had already replaced the wheels/drive gears and pinion gears prior and that did not solve my problem. Mower is 9 years old and now nice and smooth just like new for around $45 (I have to give youtube a little credit)

Axel bushings were worn, and lever on self propel cable broke

    Kevin - April 27, 2020
    Tool Type

    Lawn Mower

    Difficulty

    Hard

    Time

    15-30 minutes

    Tools Used

Socket set, Wrench Set, Snap ring pliers ,pry bar

The bushings were easy, remove snap ring and spur gear. Replace bushings. The self propel handle was difficult. Needed at least one more person, and had to flex (bend) the handle to get it back into the mower handle.

Rear wheel drive pinion and gear on the wheel kept skipping.

    Richard - July 17, 2019
Removed the wheel and the pinion and bearing housing. Pressed the new bearing into the new bearing housing and then then pressed in the fiber sleeve into the bearing housing. Install the new bearing housing into the wheel bracket. Installed the pinion spacer washer and then the pinon gear. and installed the snap ring retainer.
Installed new wheel and axle bolt with the new spacer washer. Note: I had just installed a new pinion gear a few days before.
Works ok so far. No pinion gear jumping on the wheel gear. Suspect the bearing and the fiber sleeve for the drive shaft from the transmission was worn causing the skipping problem on my Toro personal pace mower.

I pulled the rear wheels of and the handle mount to expose the bearings and sleeves.
I unscrewed the old retainer bushings.
I pressed the bearing and bush sleeve into the retainer bushing using the bench vise. this made it very easy.
I put the retainer bushings back in place and put it back together.
The mowers self-propels quietly and quickly.
