This is an authentic part is supplied by the original manufacturer for Ryobi electric pole saws. Carbon brushes press against the commutator bars on the armature to supply electricity. Over time they will wear out causing intermittent performance and eventually a no-start condition requiring a replacement. 1. took the unit apart and cleaned the oil out and the carbon from the motor where the brushes had fallen apart.
