DIY Halloween Chainsaw

DIY Halloween Chainsaw

If you’re feeling that your Halloween decorations just won’t scare the neighbors enough this year, we’ve got the solution for you.

Your favorite horror movie characters have embraced the chainsaw as one of the most frightening (and effective) weapons out there. There’s something about a revved-up chainsaw that can always make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. If you really want to scare your friends and family this year, a chainsaw prop is hard to top. In this article, we’ll show you the process of readying a chainsaw for use as a spooky Halloween prop.

Find a Chainsaw

We recommend using a gas-powered chainsaw for this project. They’re portable, loud and produce the iconic sound we all know and love. Plus it’s what Leatherface — the famous chainsaw-wielding villain — used in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

You may also use an electric chainsaw. But this may mean dragging a power cord around with you all night.

Safety First!

Before you can fire-up your chainsaw and begin the process of scaring the living heck out of your friends, family and neighbors, you’ll need to make sure that you’ve prepped the chainsaw to be completely harmless – even while coming in contact with people.

To do this, you’ll need to remove the chain from the bar of your chainsaw. And we’ll show you step by step how to remove the chain (and replace it once the fun is over) on your gas or electric chainsaw in this video:

Plan your Spooking Strategy

With your chainsaw de-chained, you’re ready to start planning out your scaring tactics. Depending on when, where, and how much you intend on scaring people, we recommend using one of these spooking methods:

Sneaky

This method uses a ‘sneaky’ approach, where you’ll hide or sit motionless before popping out of the shadows to scare unsuspecting onlookers. Check it out here:

Obvious

If you’ve ever been to a haunted house, you know that the scariest part is when you start hearing the chainsaw-guy grow closer and closer. This method is pulled straight from the professionals themselves – it involves a lot of revving of the chainsaw and chasing people. Practice your skills by watching this method here:

Whether you’re trying to out-do your neighbors to win the ‘scariest house on the block’ award, or if you’re just trying to give your friends and family a holiday to remember, the chainsaw prop is one of the best ways to have an unforgettable Halloween.
