engine hood, front guard, and muffler. Jacked up the front of tractor and blocked it up careful to keep blocks out of the way of things I needed to remove and removed the jack.
Took off tie rod, steering rod(?), and one or two other rods connecting to the front wheel
assembly. Removed three bolts running through the axle and the two front bolts on each side that went through the frame to hold the axle assembly in place so I could release the axle from the tractor and pull the whole assembly out from under the tractor.
To remove the wheels from the axle I had to pry off the black caps which had hardened with age, destroying their grease sealing ability. NOTE: check your caps and maybe save yourself some time by ordering them when ordering new axle. Next step was removing the clip rings to be able to slide the wheels out of the axle. Replace the wheels into the new axle making sure you have washers, etc in the right order and getting the snap rings back on to hold everything together, then replacing the grease caps. Up to this point I had been able to do everything myself but now had to get my wife to hold the other end of the axle to help me get the axle aligned in the holder and get the center bolt back in and the nut started on it. Don't tighten it completely because you'll need some play to get the metal part that fits in some slots under the axle to get seated correctly. You will see what I mean as you take things apart. From there it is just re-assembly. When I was done I got the grease gun out and filled the new axle. I am fortunate to have a shop and spread this job out over 2 evenings so I'm not sure how long it actually took me(since I didn't know what I was doing).
