Hello Carol, Thank you for your inquiry. The clip that sticks out next to the food chute at the top has to be over the handle, otherwise it can get stuck. Try rotating the lid clockwise until the food chute clicks into place over the handle. You can also try using boiling water over the lid to loosen it.
