There are three inserts on your shear's cutter-head. The inserts accept the screws that hold the blades, and secure the cutter-head assembly to the motor. The inserts are threaded (on the inside) to accept the screws. They are knurled (on the outside) to secure them to the cutter-head. Common problems with the inserts are stripped-out threads and worn knurling. If the threads strip-out, the insert will no longer be able to firmly secure the blades or the cutter-head. Worn knurling will make it difficult to firmly tighten the screws.
Let's get started.
REMOVING THE INSERT 1. Remove the insert.
a. Use a hex wrench to partially remove the screw (from whichever insert you are replacing). Do not completely remove the screw at this time. (The threads should remain engaged to the insert.)
b. Use the back of a screwdriver (or a small mallet) to tap the head of the screw until the insert disengages from the cutter-head on the opposite side.
c. Unthread and remove the screw from the cutter-head.
d. Remove the insert from the cutter-head.
INSTALLING THE NEW INSERT
2. Install the insert.
a. Partially install the new insert into the mounting hole on the cutter-head.
b. Install and hand-tighten the screw into the new insert.
c. Use the hex wrench to slowly tighten the screw, and seat the insert into the cutter-head (on the opposite side).
d. Repeat these steps to replace the remain inserts (as needed).
