With normal use, condensation can accumulate inside the compressor tank. The drain valve allows you to discharge excessive moisture and depressurize the air tank for servicing. Over time, rust and corrosion may prevent the drain valve from sealing properly and the tank will not hold pressure. Conversely, a drain valve that does not open at all can allow excessive moisture and rust to accumulate within the tank.
Less than impressed with your compressor? Replacing the drain valve could be the solution. This article will show you how to complete the repair in minutes. THE FACTS | THE FIX | THE FINISH REMOVING THE DRAIN VALVE [top] ! Depressurize the air tank.
Always depressurize the air tank before servicing your air compressor. To do this, open the drain valve and wait until all of the air (and pressure) has escaped. If you are unable to open the drain valve (due to rust or corrosion), discharge as much air as possible using an air chuck or blower nozzle.
1. Remove the drain valve.
Tilt the compressor onto its side to expose the drain valve.
Use a wrench to loosen the drain valve.
